Scroll down for a complete description. Fine and Rare English Sterling Silver Tankard by Hester Bateman, dated 1789. We are quite pleased to offer this George III sterling silver tankard made by the most important woman silversmith of all time, Hester Bateman in 1789. One side is engraved with the Witham family coat of arms and the motto which translates to the best deserving. The other side is engraved with a bare chest woman rising from a crown and offering what appears to be a ring.
This masterpiece tankard is formed in classic cylindrical style, banded at the center and with raised shell and swirling floral displays. It has a top hat cover and an elegant pierced interwoven vine thumb piece. The tapering S-scroll handle with urn and bead drop strap work ends in a curled heart shape medallion. It is fully hallmarked under its base, and partially hallmarked under its cover.
This Hester Bateman sterling silver tankard stands 8.66 inches in height and weighs 22 standard ounces. It is in excellent condition and bears a rich, lustrous patina. It stands perfectly firm on table or display shelf and its cover fits perfectly.
